Desert Creek backed up a recent Leicester success when taking the opening event on the final day of the turf Flat season at Doncaster.
Shirley Teasdale was landing her 19th victory of the season, but she had to endure a stewards' inquiry before being confirmed the winner of Division One of the Betfred 'Bigger And Better' Goals Galore Apprentice Handicap.
The Dandy Nicholls-trained Desert Creek (6-1) led over a furlong out and drifted towards the far rail, taking Great Expectations with him, before hanging on by a neck.
A relieved Teasdale said: "I could see him drifting across so I didn't pick my stick up, kept him going forward and there was no contact. The line he carried the other horse across was minimal.
"He's just found his feet in the last couple of months and enjoys life at Dandy's."
Chookie Royale got the better of 50-1 shot George Benjamin to claim Division Two for trainer and former jockey Keith Dalgleish and Jason Hart. The 13-2 favourite was all out to score by half a length.
Dalgleish said: "Jason gave him a great ride to keep him in the race. We were worried in the first half of the race he wasn't travelling, but Jason gave him time to find his feet. This horse is better when they go a good gallop and he's now won twice here. He knuckled down really well."
