David Pipe and Tom Scudamore gained some measure of compensation for the disappointing effort of Grands Crus in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when Goulanes landed the Ultima Business Solutions Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Cross Kennon and Benbane Head were duelling until the turn for home but were joined by Goulanes at the last, and he found a little more in the finish to prevail from the former by a neck at 7-1.
Pipe, who also struck with Our Father earlier on the card, said: "He's only a baby, but he won a point-to-point in soft ground and stuck it out really well up the hill. He's a dour stayer and he will be a lovely three-mile chaser in time. He has a good attitude, he's filled out during the summer and hopefully will be better with time."
Scudamore was given a four-day whip ban for his ride on Goulanes (December 2-5), to go with two more for careless (December 6 and 7) following his performance on Tanerko Emery in the finale.
David O'Meara's Ifandbutwhynot (15-2) gave Timmy Murphy a double after Our Father with victory in the Centaur Novices´ Handicap Hurdle.
Murphy put his mount to sleep at the back of the field, before creeping up the stands rail to lead at the last and power clear up the hill
The rider said: "A very good day at the office. One winner here would do me, so I'm delighted to get two. The key was to get him settled, if he settled well he'd run a good race. There was also a question mark about the ground but I was impressed with him today."
