Carlton makes Australia switchHeadlines
Carlton House

Gai Waterhouse is to train The Queen's first horse in Australia when she takes over the handling of smart colt Carlton House.

Third, after losing a shoe, in last year's Derby, Carlton House was produced to win the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown on his reappearance for Sir Michael Stoute and was second in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot before producing two weaker efforts at the Berkshire course.

He has his final start for Stoute in Sunday's Hong Kong Cup.

Waterhouse, a former actress who was born in Scotland, is one of Australian racing's most famous names and her training exploits have led her to be inducted into the country's hall of fame.

A press release on her website quoted Her Majesty's racing manager John Warren, who said: "Carlton House looks the perfect candidate to race in Australia, where there are a considerable number of options for an older horse.

"The Queen is very enthusiastic about the prospect of having her first runner in Australia and Gai Waterhouse, who is one of Australia's leading trainers, will train the horse.

"We will let Carlton House settle in and acclimatize before a race programme will be decided upon. It is an exciting plan and a wonderful opportunity for Her Majesty to have a horse that can participate in Australia, where racing is top-class."
