McManus purchase pours it on at AyrHeadlines
Tap Night

Tap Night, a recent purchase for JP McManus, made an impressive chasing debut at Ayr to give trainer Lucinda Russell a quick-fire treble.

Having proved himself a smart prospect over hurdles last season - he had a verdict over last year's Tolworth Hurdle winner Captain Conan at Kelso - the six-year-old began his season over timber with a win at Ayr.

Subsequently purchased by McManus, the 4-9 favourite faced three rivals in the Download The BetVictor Spincast App Now Novices' Chase and, despite a few sticky leaps on the way round, his class shone through in the straight. A slow jump at the third-last left him with a bit of ground to make up, but he quickened up impressively and shot clear to win by five lengths, without Tony McCoy having to ask a question.

Russell had earlier been on the scoresheet courtesy of victories for Green Flag and Imjoeking.

Russell told Racing UK: "I was really pleased. He was a bit novicey at a couple but he jumped well in the main and he was entitled to win it off his mark.

"I like the way he quickened up, AP (McCoy) was quite happy so it's all good news.

"I'm not too sure what we'll do about the distance, whether we go up to two and a half or stick at two miles. He's certainly got plenty of pace and I was quite pleased with how he handled the really soft ground.

"He's a cracking little horse to have, he's game and AP was pleased with his attitude - he said he's very genuine. It's lovely that JP McManus has horses up here and that he'll be watching races at Ayr and I just hope he continues to be successful."
