Wincanton abandons Saturday chasesHeadlines
Wincanton action

Wincanton is set to stage an all-hurdles card on Saturday after announcing that the chases have been abandoned.

The Somerset course will hold the final significant Champion Hurdle trial at the weekend, the Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle, but the entries for the Grade Two event have been reopened until Tuesday.

Two handicap chases and a veterans' event, all sponsored by Bathwick Tyres, have been scratched and new hurdles races will replace them on ground which is currently soft, heavy in places.

Clerk of the course Barry Johnson said: "After walking the course with Richard Linley, senior course inspector, it has been agreed to abandon the chase races.

"The chase course is waterlogged in places, with various false patches, and with the forecast has no chance of recovery before Saturday.

"The hurdles course at present is heavy, soft in places, 80% fresh ground."
