Griego Plate-bound at FestivalHeadlines
Vino Griego

Vino Griego is set to tackle the Byrne Group Plate at Cheltenham next month.

The eight-year-old finally came good at the 18th attempt over fences when landing a novice event at Prestbury Park in January before following up at Ascot earlier this month, for which he was raised 7lb by the handicapper, ruling out the novice handicap option for trainer Gary Moore.

He said: "He goes for the Byrne Group Plate and seems to be taking his racing well. I would rather have gone for the novice handicap chase but he won at Ascot a week too soon really."

He added: "The handicapper put us up 7lb so that ruled out the novice, but he's got plenty of confidence and is a horse on the up. Soft ground at Cheltenham would be a help, though."

Moore is also planning to field Fruity O'Rooney in the JLT Specialty Chase, a race in which he finished second last year.

The 10-year-old has not won since December 2011 and has been well beaten by Cheltenham Gold Cup candidate Katenko on his last two outings.

The handler said: "He definitely goes for the JLT and he's a on a nice mark at 1lb lower than last year. I think he's every bit as good as he was last year and the JLT is the plan."

The JCB Triumph Hurdle is still on the agenda for Chris Pea Green despite his eclipse in the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.

"Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong at Kempton," Moore said.

"There was no pace early on and he was far too free, which meant he just didn't quite get home. What was good was that we saw he can jump at speed, and while he possibly won't get soft ground at Cheltenham, the Triumph Hurdle is the target."
